SYMPOSIUM
13:00 - 13:40 Tuesday 21st Aug.
14:20 - 15:00 Thursday 23rd Aug.
13:30 - 14:00 Friday 24th Aug.

TO DEBATE AND DECIDE:

1a   Adopting of the collective noun of 'the European Shin Buddhist Congress' (ESBC) as a title/name for Shin groups and individuals presently supported by the International Association of Buddhist Culture (IABS) and those listed in the 2017 edition of the Directory of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Overseas Districts, under the heading of 'Europe'.

As our biennial European Shin Conferences have evolved, the term "IABC Presentation" has come to be used to differentiate IABC supported presentations from those made by members of the European branch of International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies (IASBS). This is a misnomer!

The IABC is a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation authorized by the Japanese Government to promote Buddhism throughout Europe and the rest of the world, and while many may benefit from this support, none of them can claim to be ‘members’ of that organization or have an 'IABC presentation' at ESC19.

Following discussions between the organizers of ESC19 and the IABC we have concluded that this problem could be easily and elegantly solved by the IABC-supported Shin groups and individuals in Europe adopting the collective title/name ‘European Shin Buddhist Congress’ (ESBC).

1b   If the debate and discussion of item 1 as above is at all positive, we might also discuss the prospect of 'the ESBC' staging a self-funded meeting or small conference somewhere in Europe in 2019, between the main IABC grant assisted biennial conferences.

The subjects to be discussed at these short symposiums (running to a total time of 2hr10min) primarily concern the European delegates at ESC19 and it is of course important that all of these delegates attend and contribute. However, the organisers do appreciate that this is not the case as far as attendees from other World-wide Districts is concerned. Therefore, the symposiums scheduled to take place on the 21st and 24th occur following lunch on that day – so that those not interested can take an extended lunch break! Similarly, the symposium scheduled to take place on the 23rd is the last event to take place at the conference centre that day, allowing those not participating an extra half an hour to prepare for the Shoshin Nembutsu-ge Service, Kikyoshiki Ceremony and the showing of Shinran 750th Memorial DVD taking place later that day at day at Jury’s Inn.
