A few of the eleven people that participated in our last Shōshinge Distance Learning Course have expressed their desire to go through it all over again – and so commencing 1st of May 2017 we will do just that, but in an adjusted form. Previously the course included breaks for summer and Xmas but because some participants reported that they ‘lost momentum’ during these long breaks, the 17 tutorial sessions with set reading assignments and audio clips for chanting practice will this time around be emailed to students once every two weeks continuously up until 11th Dec 2017.

Enrolment fee £100 - includes the postal delivery of the following publications:

The Collected Works of Shinran, Volume I and II

Shinshū Gongyōshū – Collection of Shinshu Services, published by the IABC.

Jōdo Service Book. Revised Edition, published by the Hongwanji International Centre.

Participants will also be emailed Rev Hisao Inagaki’s The Way of Nembutsu-Faith, A Commentary on Shinran’s Shoshinge Hymn of True Faith and Nembutsuin five PDF files which accumulate into the unabridged text of this seminal piece which is actually now out of print and becoming more and more difficult to obtain.

PLUS – As a Dharma gift from Chomon House and the Buddhist Churches of America (who are helping us to develop the Shin Shop @ www.chomonhouse.org) that might encourage participants into ongoing self-directed study and chanting practice of the complete cannon of Shinran’s Wasan’s; all participants will also be sent a free of charge copy of …

The True Pure Land Teaching. Jodo Shinshu Song of True Shinjin and Three [volumes of] Poems written by Gutoku Shinran. 412pp Published by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Includes Shoshinge Sofu and Gyofu, Jodo Wasan, Koso Wasan, Shozomatsu Wasan, and Nembutsu with translations and MUSICAL NOTATION.

The “ongoing self-directed study and chanting practice into the complete cannon of Shinran’s Wasan’s” is possible because throughout the course participants are taught how to read western musical notation and even how to understand basic Japanese tone/style diagrams.

Excluding the Jodo Shinshu Song[s] of True Shinjin, participation in the course relies upon continuous reference to all of the publications as mentioned, left.

To enable the economic participation of those that already own their own copies of any of our course reference books we offer the following reduced enrolment rates:

All books - excluding The Collected Works of Shinran, Volume I and II: £75
All books - excluding Shinshū Gongyōshū: £95
All books - excluding Jōdo Service Book: £95
All books - excluding CWS and one of the above: £70
All books - excluding CWS and both of the above: £65
N.B. Regardless of any individual choice, all participates will receive the emailed PDF downloads of Rev Hisao Inagaki’s The Way of Nembutsu-Faith and the Jodo Shinshu Song[s] of True Shinjin by surface mail.

Just a few words to let you know that I am enjoying the course and getting a lot out of it. I feel very privileged to be one of the students.” Terry. One of the eleven participant in our first Shōshinge Distance Learning Course.

In the Shōshin Nembutsutsuge, Shinran declares his entrusting to the working of Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow and expresses his joy and gratitude in being guided by the Sutra of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life and the seven eminent masters of India, China and Japan to encounter the Nembutsu teachings. Put simply, the Shōshinge encapsulates the teachings of Jodo Shinshu.

Shin Buddhist followers first began to use these religious verses as the focal point of their service in the days of Rennyo Shonin (1414-1499). Today, the Shōshinge is treated within the Shin Buddhist tradition as an independent holy text.

The main body of the course has two main elements. 1. Study of the translated into English text (by Rev Inagaki) of the Shōshinge and 2. Learning to understand music notation to enable the competent chanting of the Shōshinge sōfu and gyofu.

The course concentrates on the Nishi Hongwanji Shōshinge sōfu or semi-formal mode, and the gyōfu formal mode – but in tutorial session 1 we begin simple chanting practice and chant along with the mono tonal Sambutsuge found in the Amida Buddha Service pages @ www.chomonhouse.org. As we do this we become familiar with the Jodo Shinshu Service Book and the Shinshū Gongyōshū as supplied to all enrolled participants. In tutorial session 2, refereeing frequently to the two volumes of the Collected Works of Shinran, we locate the Shōshinge within the Kyôgyôshinshô. Thereafter we make our way through first the Shōshinge sofu and then the more complex gyofu version.
